Woman by Willem de Kooning

For this assignment, the painting I chose is Woman, painted by Willem de Kooning. First, I must admit that Willem did an incredible job in this portrait painting, which transmits thousands of emotions in each of his paint strokes. I am amazed how the painter managed to capture the problems and social stereotypes that women face every day in this painting. For me, the woman's face represents suffering and frustration which she's hiding with a false smile. All the lines that are part of the body represent a society full of stereotypes that prevent many women from being happy. I think that times have changed the way women think. For this reason, one of the details that most caught my attention in the painting is the face that can be seen in the woman's belly. The way I see it, this face represents how society has somehow taken away the decision that a woman gets to decide about her body. This face represents that she is pregnant, but she doesn't want to have the baby. Today many women have changed their perspective of what a family is. To have a family, you do not necessarily have to have children. This face represents how a woman who does not want to have children is singled out and judged by society. The colors reflected in this painting represent criticism from family, friends, and even strangers who believe they have the right to comment on the lives of others. It is fascinating how the author manages to awaken in the viewer different feelings about the woman represented in this work of art. I must admit that the author awakens a sense of pity for the woman in this painting. All the shapes and colors that make up the body represent a woman who is insecure about herself. Many eyes, arms, and legs can be seen on the body, which means that this woman is more concerned with making others happy than herself.
