Anatomy of a Scene

Lost in Translation

This film takes place in Tokyo, the largest metropolis in the world. One of the main characters is Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johansson, a newlywed to a famous photographer named John. Charlotte ends up in Tokyo while accompanying her busy husband on a work trip. While she is at the Park Hyatt Tokyo hotel bar, she meets Bob Harris, played by Bill Murray, a lonely elderly actor hired to film a Japanese whiskey commercial. Charlotte and Bill form a solid and sincere bond throughout the film as they both identify as strangers in a foreign country. Together they embark on an adventure to explore a fun night in Tokyo and enjoy the streets and bright lights of the world's largest metropolis. Then they must part with great sadness that Bill must return home. Charlotte and Bill say goodbye sadly through a hug while Bill whispers something in Charlotte's ear. It is not known what Bill says to Charlotte at the end of the film.

Arrival

This film has as main protagonists Dr. Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, and Ian Donnelly, played by Jeremy Renner. Louise is a linguistics educator who is teaching a small group of students at the beginning of the film when suddenly all the phones start ringing off the hook. When they turned on the television, they discovered that many extraterrestrial vessels were landing in different parts of the world. Louise was taken by Colonel Weber to a military base because they needed her language skills to try to communicate with the aliens. The military formed military bases at all the places where the extraterrestrial vessels landed to get more information. Louis and Ian managed to enter one of the extraterrestrial vessels with a group of soldiers, and for the first time, they managed to see the aliens and communicate with them through Symbols. The aliens are known as heptapods.

After Louise's communication with the aliens, she begins to have dreams in the alien language with a young woman named Hanna who communicates with her. Louis decides to ask the aliens who Hanna is, so they give her a message, "Use weapon." The letter created panic among the Chinese, who decided to provide the aliens with 24 hours to leave the Earth. Louise tried to help the aliens because they did not know the difference between weapons and tools. Louise and Ian managed to get to the aliens' vessel alone while the soldiers were planting a C4 bomb. Louis and Ian were removed from the vessel with a message from the aliens that they needed to decipher to help them quickly. Louise manages to understand that the language of the heptopods is a gift for humans since it allows them to see the future, and thus they will be able to help the aliens in the next 3000 years.

My favorite scene from this movie is how in the beginning, it shows Louis having flashbacks of his daughter who died at a young age from illness. Then during the movie, she has flash-forwards with Hanna, who she then realizes is going to be her daughter in the future.
