Photographer's Eye

In this assignment, I want to present a collection of photos I took during a trip to Comuna 13 of Medellín in Colombia. When you see each of the graffiti, you will understand how each artist made an effort to capture a message of peace and love, all aiming to leave so many years of violence behind. Comuna 13 in Medellín has been one of the neighborhoods most affected by drug cartels. For this reason, artists have tried to transcend through art. Artists are trying to leave behind this dark past of violence and insecurity. Currently, Comuna 13 in Medellín has gone from being one of the most insecure neighborhoods in the country to being a cultural attraction for all art lovers. Commune 13 has hundreds of graffiti made by people from the area.

Look of Hope

This graffiti is one of my favorites as it portrays the look of a person looking at the horizon with great enthusiasm and hope. In times of difficulty, the last thing to lose is hope, which is why these artists wanted to capture an image representing peace, security, and hope for the community.

Dreaming With The Eyes Open

This graffiti is one of the most recognized in Comuna 13 as it represents a strong and fighter woman who seeks to do everything possible to protect her family and be able to provide them with a better future. This is the image of a Colombian woman who fights to achieve a better country for her children and future generations.

A Cry for Peace

Art is the best way to deal with war and injustice. Graffiti is a way to capture thoughts and desires and thus express them to the world. A piece of graffiti shares thousands of stories and feelings with which others can feel identified. In this image, we can see how the artists desperately ask for peace.

Life and Death

This graffiti gives us an important message about life and death. Many of us are prisoners of our minds. Therefore, artists decide to paint birds as a sign of freedom. You have to let go of all bad feelings and thus be able to make way for a new morning full of peace and love.
